NABA-AZ's Annual Seven Generations Awards Dinner Planning Committee is requesting nominations for this year's Awards recipients in the following three categories:

Member of the Year
The award is given to a member with a significant history of service and dedication to the organization and its goals.

Life Time Achievement
This award recognizes and honors an individual who has made a substantial contribution in the area of Indian Law in the State of Arizona for a long period of time.

Seventh Generation Community Award
This Award is to honor individuals or groups that make an impact in Indian Country; the product or service does not have to be legal in nature.

Navajo Nation Bar Association CLE Credit: “This CLE has been approved by the Navajo Nation Bar Association for the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education requirement. This activity will qualify for up to 8 hours towards the Navajo Bar CLE requirement, including 2 hours of Navajo ethics.”

Arizona State Bar Association CLE: "The State Bar of Arizona does not approve or accredit CLE activities for the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education requirement. This activity may qualify for up to 8 hours toward your annual CLE requirement for the State Bar of Arizona, including 2 hours of professional responsibility."

NABA-AZ golf Tournament

The NABA-AZ 3rd Annual Golf Tournament will be held at the Whirlwind Golf Course at the Gila River Indian Community. It is a spectacular course and our rate of $150.00 per golfer ($560 for a foursome) is an excellent value. For those of you who did not participate in last year's tournament, we had a great turnout and it was an exciting event. NABA-AZ plans on using profits from the tournament to provide Native American law students with scholarships and on community outreach matters.

The sponsorship levels are listed on the flyer and the sponsorship packages sheet. Sponsorships range from $200 for a hole sponsorship up to $5,000 for a title sponsor. Sponsorship at the golf tournament provides your firm/organization with recognition at the tournament. Members can also assist by helping to solicit items for the raffle. If interested in donating to the raffle, please contact April Olson at April.Olson@gric.nsn.us. This event will only be successful with the assistance of our membership - that's why I am asking you to please consider asking your employer to purchase a foursome or a hole sponsorship. In addition, please forward the flyer to everyone you know that would be interested. This event is a great networking/client development opportunity. Last year, many of our participants were tribal leaders, tribal attorneys and those working in tribal communities.

Professor Ferguson Bohnee chosen NABA-AZ Member of the Year

Patty Furguson-Bohnee Patty Ferguson-Bohnee, director of the Indian Legal Clinic, has been chosen 2009 NABA-AZ Member of the Year Award by the Native American Bar Association of Arizona.

Ferguson-Bohnee was chosen for her "immeasurable" work in both the legal community and the Native American community, including her service as co-founder and vice president of NABA-AZ, her work for the Native community on the Election Protection project, and her recent appointment as vice president of the National NABA.

Ferguson-Bohnee will be recognized at the inaugural Seven Generations Awards Dinner from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Whirlwind Golf Club on the Gila River Indian Community, 5692 W. North Loop Road in Chandler.

Ferguson-Bohnee has substantial experience in Indian law, election law and policy matters, voting rights, and status clarification of tribes. She has testified before the United States Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and the Louisiana State Legislature regarding tribal recognition, and has successfully assisted four Louisiana tribes in obtaining state recognition.

She has represented tribal clients in administrative, state, federal, and tribal courts, as well as before state and local governing bodies and proposed revisions to the Real Estate Disclosure Reports to include tribal provisions. She has assisted in complex voting rights litigation on behalf of tribes, and she has drafted state legislative and congressional testimony on behalf of tribes with respect to voting rights' issues.

Our Purpose:
With the cost of tuition rising each year, Native law students are finding it increasingly difficult to afford law school. The financial burdens of law school can prevent and delay legal education of many Native American law students who often are supporting their families while pursuing their law degrees. That is why, starting in 2008, NABA-AZ proudly began its efforts to assist Native law students in Arizona with managing the burden of the increasingly high cost of tuition. In March 2008, NABA-AZ held the first annual golf tournament benefiting Native law students. Our first event was a great success, drawing more than 72 golfers and raising enough money to provide book scholarships to needy Native law students! With your support at our 2nd Annual Tournament we believe we can provide more students with even more substantial financial assistance towards educations costs.

NATIVE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION OF ARIZONA EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

TOPIC: An Insider's View: “California v. Cabazon Band of Mission Indians” - The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 was adopted by Congress in direct response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1987 decision in California v. Cabazon Band of Mission Indians. In Cabazon, the Court held that California could not prohibit or regulate tribal gaming activities within that State. Glenn Feldman, a shareholder at Mariscal Weeks, represented the Cabazon Band in that case. His presentation will include both an interesting perspective on the judicial history of Indian gaming as well as taped segments of the Supreme Court argument in the Cabazon case.

NABA-AZ UPDATES.Job Announcement. Attached is a job announcement regarding an open position for Pima County Juvenile Court Commissioner. The job closes on February 6, 2009 at 5:00 pm. If interested, please apply early.

Native Health. Attached is a Native Health Thank You note for the NABA-AZ holiday donation drive. The drive was a huge success!

NABA-AZ Student Mixer

The second NABA-AZ/Student Mixer was a huge success! We had a great turnout and were able to award four book scholarships. A special thank you goes out to Vanessa Martinez, Board Member Sonia Nayeri's sister, for making a generous donation of $1,000 to our organization. This donation was used in NABA-AZ's first book scholarship program.
