JOB: Tribal Court Advocate - SRPMIC

Tribal Court Advocate (Government Advocate)
Job Description

Under general supervision of the General Counsel or designee, represents the Community in civil matters and performs other legal tasks within the SRPMIC government. This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.Tasks: 1. Under supervision of the supervising attorney, appears and represents the SRPMIC in civil matters before the SRPMIC Court, including the SRPMIC Appellate Court and in administrative proceedings and other similar settings. Prepares cases and advocates for the Community and its departments, divisions and enterprises. Advises clients, both orally and in writing, regarding case progress.2. Under supervision, conducts legal research and analysis, performs factual investigations and analysis, and prepares legal memoranda, pleadings and motions, as directed.3. Ensures that files are kept and maintained in a timely and professional manner.4. Maintains confidences with all clients, office staff and work related issues.5. Under supervision, assists in training and updating departments on statutory or case law changes.6. Assists in performing liaison duties between SRPMIC departments, enterprises and their associates regarding matters handled. 7. Attends and participates in legal education and training courses in order to gain proficiency in job related matters and legal issues in general. Participates in case discussions and other meetings to discuss legal strategies, case acceptance and case loads.8. Performs various job related tasks as assigned.
Skills/Requirements

Education & Experience: High school graduation or GED and either one year of experience working in tribal courts or at least two (2) years of experience working in tribal government. • Special Requirements: Must demonstrate a commitment to ongoing training and education. Failure to successfully complete training may be a condition for termination and/or repayment of costs. Successful completion of any test established by the SRPMIC related to the practice of laws in the SRPMIC Court. Community Code requires that a Community Court Advocate be an enrolled member of SRPMIC.
